Let's begin!

#1 CHOOSING THE PRUNING PERIOD

One of the first things you absolutely must do is choose the perfect time for pruning lemons.

The best time for pruning is between February (in Southern Italy) and March (in Northern Italy). But in reality, you need to be very careful because it all depends on the weather trend, meaning you must always avoid the risk of frost. In fact, nowadays, pruning lemons in March has become dangerous due to late frosts, especially in the North. For this reason, pruning often shifts between April (in the South) and May (in the North), when flowering has even already begun. Alternatively, you can prune lemons in September, provided the climate is mild, not too hot or too cold.

The seasons when plants best withstand pruning are those with mild and stable climates, therefore not excessively cold or hot. It is therefore absolutely necessary to avoid January, when the cold makes the bark harder and wounds are slower to heal. Temperate climates make the bark softer and therefore easier to treat.

#2 WHICH BRANCHES TO CUT

In addition to choosing the optimal time for lemon pruning, you also need to know what to prune and which branches to cut if you want to achieve the desired result. This strategy is truly powerful because it can help you grow the plant healthily, avoiding inconveniences.

When pruning lemons, very old and woody branches should be cut to make room for new shoots ready to produce new fruits. At the same time, all branches with a vertical tendency and suckers on the trunk or at the base should also be pruned, as these weaken the plant and can penalize fruit production.

The canopy should be thinned in the central part to encourage the penetration of sunlight and air among the innermost branches. The branches should be shortened by a few centimeters, especially the taller ones, to prevent excessive vertical growth, respecting the harmony of the canopy.

#3 HOW TO AVOID DISEASES

Too few people do this when it comes to pruning their lemon plant. Unfortunately, the consequences can be disastrous and prevent them from achieving their goals.

Branches should always be cut with a clean cut, as any ragged cuts could cause diseases. To avoid these, it is better to cut branches with oblique cuts to facilitate water drainage. It will then be necessary to spread a good healing product on the cuts to prevent attack by parasites and fungal diseases. You can use a healing product or common grafting wax.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article: we hope the information has been useful and that you can use what you have learned to obtain a well-flowering lemon plant.
